The job starts with a door compatibility check. Backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the existing lock bore, is typically 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches, and the smart lock must match. Door thickness also matters; most electronic deadbolts fit doors between 1-3/8 and 2 inches thick. Houston’s wood and composite front doors usually fall within range, but the measurement is confirmed before any hardware is removed.
Once compatibility is confirmed, the existing deadbolt is removed and the new electronic unit is fitted. The strike plate is checked for alignment, a misaligned plate causes the bolt to bind, which strains the motor and shortens the lock’s life. If the existing strike plate position is off, it is adjusted before the lock body goes on. The latch is tested manually before any electronic function is enabled.
Keypad pairing and app access configuration follow the mechanical fit. The installer sets an initial user code, pairs the lock to your phone, and runs a deadbolt throw test to confirm the bolt seats fully at both lock and unlock. Battery level is checked and noted. You leave with working keypad entry, confirmed app control, and a physical key as backup, all tested before the installer leaves.
