Security System Maintenance Questions

Questions

How It Works

What gets checked during a maintenance visit?

The technician checks the alarm panel, keypad, door and window sensors, motion detectors, cameras, and backup battery. A live signal test confirms the monitoring connection is open. Any component that fails its check is repaired or flagged before the visit ends.

Do I need a service visit if the system still turns on?

Yes. A system can power on and still have a backup battery that will not hold a charge, a sensor that misses triggers, or a monitoring connection that has dropped silently. Regular checks catch those failures before the system is needed in a real situation.

Can I just replace the batteries myself and skip the visit?

Battery replacement fixes a low-battery warning, but it does not test sensor contacts, camera recording, or the monitoring connection. If the system still shows errors or false alarms after a battery change, the sensors, wiring, or panel need a closer look.

What happens if I delay getting the system checked?

A marginal backup battery that is not caught before a power outage will drop the system offline exactly when it is needed most. In Houston, that risk is highest heading into hurricane season. A sensor fault left unchecked can mean a door or window goes undetected for months.

How often should a home security system be serviced?

Once a year is a reasonable baseline for most Houston single-family homes. Systems in older properties or those that have never been serviced should be checked sooner. Any time the system shows an error, triggers false alarms, or loses its monitoring connection is also a prompt to schedule a visit.
