Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation Questions
Every question we get asked about carbon monoxide detector installation, answered straight.
Questions
How It Works
Where should CO detectors go in a home with gas appliances?
Texas code requires a UL-listed CO alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping area in homes with fuel-burning appliances. A detector is also needed near the interior door of an attached garage. Each level of the home needs coverage if it has a fuel-burning source or sleeping area.
Is a smoke alarm the same as a carbon monoxide alarm?
No. A smoke alarm detects combustion particles from fire. A CO alarm detects carbon monoxide gas. Some combination units handle both, but only if positioned correctly for each function. Relying on a smoke alarm alone leaves the home without CO detection.
Do I need an electrician for a CO detector?
Battery-powered units do not require electrical work. Hard-wired CO detectors connect to the home’s circuit and include battery backup, those may need an electrician depending on the wiring. The installer confirms which type suits each location before any work begins.
What happens if I delay getting CO detectors fitted?
A home with gas appliances and no working CO detector near sleeping areas has no warning if CO builds up overnight. Carbon monoxide is odorless, so there is no other way to detect it. Texas code requires coverage, an undetected buildup can be fatal before anyone wakes.
Does it matter how high on the wall the detector is mounted?
Height matters less than following the manufacturer’s specific instructions for that unit. Some models specify wall height, others ceiling mounting. The installer mounts each unit exactly per its spec and confirms it is not blocked by furniture, drapes, or other obstructions.
What does Texas code actually require for CO detectors?
26 TAC 748.3193 requires UL-listed CO detectors installed per manufacturer specifications and not covered by furniture or drapes. The International Residential Code, adopted in Texas, also requires CO alarms in homes with attached garages or fuel-fired appliances, with detectors within 10 feet of sleeping areas.
